RONALDO, HERNÁNDEZ AND JESÉ SCORE IN 3-0 VICTORY

Cristiano Ronaldo scored on a free kick for the first time this season and Chicharito Hernández and Jesé added goals to give Los Blancos all three points and draw them within a point of league leaders Barcelona.

Manager Carlo Ancelotti's heavily rotated starting XI saw Chicharito earn a rare start up top, as the Mexican joined Jesé, who replaced Benzema, and Ronaldo in attack. Toni Kroos was rested and in his stead was Asier Illarramendi, who joined Luka Modric and Isco in midfield, while in the back goalkeeper Keylor Navas also got a rare start in goal and was shielded by back four of Álvaro Arbeloa, Raphael Varane, Sergio Ramos and Marcelo.

After a strike from Sergio Ramos that banged off the crossbar and a follow-up shot from Isco that managed to hit both posts, Real would break the deadlock in the 21st minute through Ronaldo's free kick. The Portuguese's effort took a hop and crossed up Eibar goalkeeper Irureta who was wrong-footed and could only watch as the ball bounced into goal. For Ronaldo, who scored his 300th goal with Real earlier in midweek versus Rayo, it was his 38th league goal of the season

Nine minutes later it was Chicharito finding the back of the net, placing a finely taken header that spun into the corner of the net off an Arbeloa cross from the right to five Los Blancos a 2-0 advantage.

Real were clearly in control during the first half as they dominated their visitors from the Basque Country, and then looked to extend their lead at the start of the second stanza. But Eibar hung tough and managed to keep Real at bay for the most start to start the second 45 minutes, while also forcing Navas into an occasional stop at the other end.

The most bizarre moment of the match came in the 69th minute and it coincided with Eibar's best scoring chance of the afternoon. Striker Federico Piovaccari got behind the Real defense and was bearing down on goal with Pepe right behind him.
But Piovaccari slipped once he got inside the area and in an attempt to win the ball back, Piovaccari fouled Pepe, who collided with Navas, leaving both men writhing on the group in pain.

Eventually they each were able to continue, but it was a scary moment for the Portuguese defender who has had his share of injuries this season.

Jesé sealed the match for the hosts with a tremendous individual effort in the 83rd minutes, as the Canarian collected the ball, dashed to the right and unfurled a shot that whizzed right past Irureta and into the net to push the Real lead to 3-0.

That would wrap up the day's events as Ancelotti's men will now turn their attention to their massive Champions League quarterfinal first leg versus city rivals Atlético Madrid.

FIRST GOAL FROM FREE KICK SINCE MUNICH LAST YEAR

Cristiano Ronaldo had not scored from a direct free kick since Real Madrid's 4-0 win away to Bayern Munich in the Champions League semi-final second leg on 29th April 2014.
But he finally broke that drought with the strike that put Real Madrid 1-0 up against Eibar, though he did get some help from visiting goalkeeper Xabi Irureta, who could have done more to prevent it.

The last time Ronaldo had converted a free kick in the league was on 26th March 2014, against Sevilla at the Sánchez Pizjuán.

PLAYER PRAYED BEFORE GAME AND SCORED

It was the first time the Mexican marksman - who is on loan from Manchester United - had the chance to start for Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu. Hernández had previously been named in the starting line-up on the odd occasion under Carlo Ancelotti, but always in away fixtures.
'Chicharito' repaid his manager for the opportunity by scoring his first goal at home for the club in the 31st minute. Álvaro Arbeloa swung in a cross from the right which was headed in off the far post of Xabi Irureta's goal by the Mexican. He had almost opened his personal account earlier but his strike was ruled out because he was in an offside position.
The goal is Hernández's fifth for 'Los Blancos' - his four previous efforts all came away from the Bernabéu.

ANCELOTTI DOES NOT TRUST EIBAR

The Italian says that winning the appeal against Cristiano Ronaldo's yellow card is great news. "We appealed because the booking was unfair and we have to field our strongest possible side against Eibar, a team we have the utmost respect for".

On Bale:"He isn't available. He underwent a routine scan. He is suffering from muscle fatigue and it's best to rest him ahead of Tuesday's game".

On Cristiano:"I don't think there is anything to discuss, especially after winning our appeal".

On Modric:"He's been tired. I think they'll all be better on Saturday. Luka is going to play".

On Keylor and rotating players:"They're all professionals. It's different for a keeper because he only gets a chance to play if there is an injury. It's a different situation. An outfield player can come off the bench in the last ten minutes and still have an impact".

On Jesé:"He's starting to look good. He needed time to get over his injury. Khedira came back too early and had problems. These types of injuries need a year. He's going to play plenty of football between now and the end of the season".

On Pepe:"Every game comes with its own starting line-up. He's available for selection on Saturday and Tuesday, but let's not confuse the Eibar starting XI with the one I'll name for Tuesday".

On Coentrao and Khedira:"Khedira has a back injury and Coentrao has a knee problem. They won't make the squad".

On substitutions:"If I think a player can make an impact for one minute, I'll put him on. I think the players are starting to understand that. If I think a player should go on in the last second, then I'll put him on. Manchester United won a Champions League thanks to two goals in the last two minutes".

On Casillas:"Iker made it very clear, he wants to stay. We want him to stay. I want him to stay. He doesn't need protecting".

On Bale and Kroos's replacements:"Illarra and Jesé have every chance of playing"

On having more home games than Barça:"I don't look at it like that. There are eight games left. All of them are going to be tough, for all of us, because we're playing for our lives. We have to be ready and give our all".

OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS FOR BRAZILIAN AFTER MIDWEEK EXCLUSION

The stats don't lie. Neymar's form has dipped alarmingly, particularly in front of goal, with the 23-year-old in the midst of a drought in La Liga stretching back to 15th February. This is far too long for a player of his talent.

The Brazilian flew out of the traps at the beginning of the campaign, forming a deadly partnership with Leo Messi on the pitch while Luis Suárez watched on and bearing little resemblance to the erratic performer of last season. He was a revelation, averaging a goal a game and putting together a six-match scoring streak at one point. This was a real shot in the arm and, truth be told, a pleasant surprise for Luis Enrique.

But now things have changed. The former Santos star looks a shadow of his former self and isn't contributing goals or assists. Suárez's scintillating performances have left Neymar in the shade and the no. 11 isn't being anywhere near as decisive as before. Barça are bearing the brunt of this decline.

However, Luis Enrique is putting his faith in the Brazil captain to start showing his true colours again, starting in Seville. The tactician feels that Neymar still has a key role to play as Barça look to capture silverware on several fronts over the next couple of months.

WITH ARSENAL AND LIVERPOOL VYING FOR HIS ATTENTION

The nº24 player will stand in for Toni Kroos in the match against Eibar. In all probability, it will be one of the last times we will see him wearing the Real shirt, as Carlo Ancelotti can find little use for him. As things stand, he has a foot and a half out of the Bernabéu's back door. The player has realised that he does not form a part of his manager's plans. The only possibility of him getting a look-in would be if the Italian left. And if Zinedine Zidane were to replace him, all the better, as the two get on very well together.

Such musings are of course pipe dreams. The reality is that Ancelotti is going nowhere - but Illarra most certainly is. At present, the player has various offers on the table from Premier League clubs and he is deciding which one to run away with. The main contenders are Arsenal and Liverpool. Whatever happens, he looks set to play in England.

Arsenal have been after the player for some time now. Liverpool, on the other hand, are the new kids on the block and over the last few weeks their desire to take the player in has grown exponentially. The club is ready to put in a succulent offer to Real, who paid out €32 million to Real Sociedad for him back in the summer of 2013. If the two clubs reach an agreement, Illarra would love to make a move to Anfield.

STARTING FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE HIS INJURY

It has taken Carlo Ancelotti 120 days to decide to give the youngster starter status. 24 games have come and gone, in which he has played in 17 of them, but only getting a total of 377 minutes.

Against Eibar, out on the right wing, exactly the opposite side to where he likes to shine, Jesé will be out to show his manager that he is the same spectacular player that wowed the Real faithful every week until his knee gave out on him.

With Ancelotti giving him playing time drop by drop, it hasn't been easy for Jesé since his recovery. When he has played, it has often been in extremely adverse conditions – going on with the score against them and just a few minutes left on the clock. In the only game that he was given enough time to settle in and strut his stuff, against Sevilla when he was given an hour, he scored and put in a formidable performance.

Ancelotti and co. are careful to show the young player that he is a loved and appreciated member of the group. The Italian manager is sure that Jesé is bound for great things at the club, and has told him so on many occasions. The match against Eibar could be his first step in making his comeback.

SIGNING OF BRAZILIAN CASTS DOUBT ON VETERAN'S FUTURE

Carlo Ancelotti is pleased with Arbeloa and the sentiment is mutual. Despite his diminished role, the 32-year-old has still made 26 appearances this season - enough to make him feel useful and prevent him from looking for pastures new, even though he has had some good offers. In fact, the former Liverpool and Deportivo man had the chance to leave last summer but opted to stay. His good relationship with Carvajal heightened his belief that the club might stick with the same right-back pairing for another season.

The signing of Danilo has thrown a spanner in the works. With both the Brazil international and Carvajal ahead of him in the pecking order, he will be left as the third wheel, a situation that means it is likely his days at the Bernabéu are numbered.

DEFENDER COULD GET EIBAR RUN-OUT WITH EYE ON ATLÉTICO

The Portuguese central defender has been working his way back from an injury to a muscle in his right thigh, which he picked up during the 'Clásico' on 22nd March. Though he subsequently went away on international duty, he could only train with his compatriots for one day and, having been ruled out for Portugal's fixtures, was cleared to return to Madrid early to continue his recovery.

Raphaël Varane and Sergio Ramos are likely to start against Eibar, but Carlo Ancelotti is considering giving Pepe a run-out so that he can blow off the cobwebs ahead of Tuesday's Champions League quarter-final first leg against Atlético de Madrid. This suggests that the former Porto stalwart will be preferred to the young Frenchman when push comes to shove, despite Varane having capitalised on both of his fellow centre-backs' fitness problems to make a personal-record number of appearances this season.
Ancelotti has stressed Pepe's importance on numerous occasions and has in fact asked the Real Madrid hierarchy to renew the veteran's contract, which runs until 2016, for another year or two.

'EL NIÑO' WANTS CAUSE FOR CELEBRATION WITH ATLÉTICO

Fernando Torres has revealed that his personal objectives in his new era at Atlético de Madrid are "to help the team, play many games and score many goals". 'El Niño' feels the club to he his home and would love to "see a celebration at Neptuno [the Madrilenian fountain where Atlético fans traditionally go to celebrate their successes]", just like he did when he was a child.

"I really hope to see a celebration at Neptuno, like I did when I was 11, with the 'double'" he enthused in an interview published on UEFA's official website. Back when he was 11 years old, he played in the club's youth system and delighted at his heroes winning the league and cup, the legendary 'double', back in the 1995-96 season.

Torres said that it was "difficult to explain" the relationship he has with Atlético de Madrid. "Ever since I started playing football, I have been a fan of this team. I was luckily enough to join its ranks when I was just 10 years old, the year of the 'double'. It was a great year, winning la Liga and the cup. I had great moments back then… from that point on I followed the team along its ups and downs and even in relegation. But the passion and excitement of the fans never changed."

'LOS BLANCOS' INTERESTED IN BAYER LEVERKUSEN KEEPER

Real have been keeping their beady eye on the Bayer Leverkusen goalkeeper for some time now and it seems that he ticks all the right boxes in order to become the club's nº1 man between the sticks in the near future.

The Spanish club has spoken with Bayer Leverkusen to ask what the shot-stopper's contractual situation is and to see if they are open to negotiation. The German club answered positively as they are aware that every year they have to let at least one of their star players go in order to balance their books.

The suits at the Bernabéu are hotly debating whether they should go ahead and sign the goalkeeper even though they are not clear on what will be happening with Casillas yet. The club is of course going to bring in Augusto Batalla, but he is an investment for the future and to start off he will go to Castilla. The two men that are being considered to take over from Casillas in the first team are Leno and David de Gea.

Over the last few weeks, it seems that there has been a lot more going on regarding the signing of Leno, although the possibility of wooing De Gea away from Manchester United has not been shelved just yet. Bother keepers are brilliant at what they do. The problems arise when looking at the price tags. The Bayer man has a set maximum price of €18 million – his buy-out clause. The other one's situation is a little more complicated as his present team are direct rivals on the European stage. As things stand, the favourite is the German U21 star, but in the world of football, anything could happen.

SET TO BECOME THE FACE OF SWISS BANK, BANK JULIUS BAER

Cristiano Ronaldo could be set to become the new international face of Bank Julius Baer, a financial institution based in Zurich, if ongoing negotiations between the bank and the Portuguese footballer's agents come to fruition.

Having entered the private banking market in Spain just two years ago, Julius Baer now wants to go global with its brand with a campaign spearheaded by none other than CR7, one of the players with greatest influential weight and media power in the international market.
Ronaldo already has experience of sponsorship in the banking sector as he was previously involved with the Portuguese Banco Espirito Santo. The collapse of this financial institution prompted the Bank of Portugal to split the BES into two parts: a 'good bank' called 'Novo Banco' and a 'bad bank' still trading as BES. The player did not terminate his contract with the entity following this development and his image is still used to promote some 'Novo Banco' products.

Bank Julius Baer, founded in 1890, has seen considerable growth in the private banking sector in recent years. It is, however, not the only financial institution interested in snapping up CR7. Merchant Bank in the Middle East and Credit Swiss are also interested in signing the Portuguese star.

FEELING DIZZY DURING WARM-UP, IT AFFECTED HIS GAME

The French player was not feeling well and, after talking to the doctors, was given a couple of pills to take.
The striker returned to the session and subsequently played the game, seemingly fine. He was seen to put his hand to his head before kick-off and again once the game got underway, apparently feeling dizzy again. It was not his best day and he failed to make an impact on the game as he usually does, with no clear opportunities until the second half when he sent the ball wide. Carlo Ancelotti replaced him after 71 minutes.
The reality is that Benzema was not firing on all cylinders. The Frenchman was suffering from vertigo which thankfully did not turn out to be anything serious - confirmed by the fact that he was back training inside the Valdebebas facilities yesterday. Providing Ancelotti sees fit to include him in the line up, he will play against Eibar.

CASILLAS DREAMS OF REACHING THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FINAL IN BERLIN

He also highlighted the importance of not dropping any more points in the league: "We have to put pressure on them and hope they slip up. One more mistake and we're out. We have to win every game we have left".

Iker also commented on the Champions League tie against Atlético de Madrid: "We've been struggling against them but we want to go through. We're eager to successfully defend the title we won last hear in Lisbon". In order to do that they first have to make it to the final in Berlin, something they are "really excited" about. The Spain international explained what this type of game feels like: "You think a lot about what might happen and then the game is nothing like you expected".

THE WELSHMAN UNDERWENT A SERIES OF SCANS

The Welshman is suffering from muscle fatigue - no tear was found -, which means that Carlo Ancelotti is likely to rest him for the game against Eibar (especially now that Cristiano Ronaldo is available after winning his yellow card appeal) in an attempt to have him in tip top condition for Tuesday's game against Atlético.
Bale left the medical centre a little after 10:30 in the morning. It remains to be seen whether Real Madrid will issue a medical report as the Welshman did not take part in training with the rest of the team.

Gareth Bale has undergone a series of tests at the Sanitas Clinic in La Moraleja (Madrid) to determine the severity of the injury he picked up against Rayo.

DOES NOT THINK RONALDO WILL BE PUNISHED

They could be interpreted as claiming that his side were being robbed. The 'Azulgrana' can understand the Real player's reaction.

"It was in the heat of the moment. That's the way he is and sometimes he expresses himself and reacts like that. It's not the first time he's made that gesture. He's never been punished for it before and I don't think he will be now. It's not my problem anyway", said Piqué during a charity event where he acted as the ambassador for the Laureus Foundation together with Álex Corretja at the Institut Guttmann.

The player was optimistic with respect to the future in light of the way his team are playing at the moment. "We're on good form. The team are in great physical shape, as we've shown in recent games. As for our play, some days are better than others, but we're getting the results. At this stage of the season the important thing is winning."

He is not taking any comfort from the fact that PSG's squad will be weakened in the first leg of the tie against the French team: "We are two teams who know each other well and respect each other. I think the two games will be similar to the ones we played in the group stage. It's true that they have players out, but it's always tough playing in Paris. We have to go out and play our game, create chances through possession, although it's also true that we play more direct football now."

Barcelona have a tough schedule ahead of them, both in La Liga and the Champions League. "I've always said that April was going to be an extremely difficult month. The important thing is to finish it the way we've started. By that I mean still being in the Champions League and top of La Liga. It's going to be hard and I don't think anyone is going to win all of their points in the league. We saw last year that points get dropped in the final games."

REAL MADRID WIN YELLOW CARD APPEAL

Real Madrid have won their appeal against the yellow card the striker was shown by referee Melero López for allegedly diving inside the area when he was clearly brought down by Amaya.

With Toni Kroos and James Rodríguez suspended for the Eibar game, the decision goes some way to solving Carlo Ancelotti's selection headache ahead of the match. Gareth Bale may also miss the upcoming match, with the Welshman likely to be rested in an attempt to get him fully fit for the Champions League quarter-final game against Atlético.

JAMES STARS

Cristiano Ronaldo scored again (his 300th goal in 288 games for Real Madrid), but most striking in Los Blancos' 2-0 win at Rayo Vallecano on Wednesday night was the display of James Rodriguez, who looks to have returned after two months out injured full of drive and hunger.
During the opening 45 minutes, when Rayo had Madrid on the back foot for long spells, it was James who looked the biggest threat for his side. He also lead the charge after the break -- kicking things off with a superb cross, which was headed just wide by Gareth Bale moments after the restart.
Next came another 20-yard drive which flew just on the wrong side of the post. Ronaldo then got the opener, finishing off a move begun deep in midfield by the Colombian. Soon afterwards it was James himself who made the points safe with an unerring drive from the edge of the box.
A huge debate has arisen over which of Carlo Ancelotti's talented and expensive attacking stars should miss out when everyone's fit and available. Many fans and pundits would leave out Bale, while Ancelotti himself tends to bench Isco. But nobody seriously thinks James -- 13 goals and 13 assists already in a first, injury-hit season in Spain -- does not merit a place in the XI.

511 MINUTES WITHOUT A GOAL

Manchester City's star player has been unable to save his side due to his failure to hit the target and a lack of collaboration from his teammates. Agüero has now gone 511 minutes without scoring in all competitions. Even though his league haul currently stands on the same figure which he managed last campaign (17), the goals have dried up. He has not hit the back of the net since scoring against Barcelona in the first leg of the Champions League last-16 tie on 24th February. This is highly unusual for such a lethal striker.

The drought extends even further back in the Premiership. The last time he netted in the league was during City's 5-1 drubbing of Newcastle on 21st February. It has been a decidedly arid panorama since then: five league games without a goal. Even though he has scored 23 goals this season, only four of those have come since he got injured against Everton in December. The Sky Blues have hit a rough patch and their problems have taken a toll on his effectiveness.

Kun tried to break the dry spell again against Crystal Palace, hitting the post in the first half. However, none of his other attempts were on target. He moved, linked up with his teammates (40 passes, 85% of them good) and battled with the centre backs, but without success. He drew defenders out of position and went past them with the ball, but was unable to penetrate the maze of legs in front of Palace's goalmouth.

Agüero has only scored four goals in the last 14 games. Manchester City are running out of steam when they move forward. In their last eight games, both domestic and European, the Citizens have only netted eight times. By this stage of the season last year they had scored 85 goals in the Premiership. This time around they have only managed 63 - that's a huge difference of 22 goals. Kun and the rest of the City front line are decidedly off-cue.

TALKS OVER NEW CONTRACT BREAK DOWN

Dani Alves's agent, Dinorah Santana, has announced that the full-back will definitely be leaving Barça in the summer after new contract talks fell through.

The club's final offer, which the Brazilian rejected, was a three-year deal contingent on Alves playing in 60% of the club's games. "The negotiations are over. Dani will see out his contract at Barcelona in the best possible manner", Santana stated.

Alves will be free to move to another club on 30th June, when his contract at the Camp Nou expires. He has been hotly tipped to join PSG.

ASSURES THAT HIS DREAM WAS ALWAYS TO PLAY FOR BARÇA

Luis Suárez revealed that "Real Madrid were very interested in me, but my dream was always to play for Barça. When I heard the name 'Barcelona', I didn't hesitate for a moment".

Are Barça the best team in the world?
Yes, they are for me. For all what the club is and what it stands for. For me, yes.

If you hadn't gone to Barça, would you have played for Real Madrid?
You never know what will happen in football, but luck would have it that Barça knocked on my door, and that was the club I wanted. It was a dream that I had had for many years and it came true.

Playing alongside Messi and Neymar lessens your chances of scoring?
No, quite the opposite. For me it is a privilege; it makes life easier for me, because in the other teams I have played in I felt an enormous responsibility. Being surrounded by such great players is a weight off.

Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo...
Messi

League leaders, in the quarter-finals in the Champions League, in the cup final... Is there talk in the dressing room of winning all three?
No, we don't talk about winning all three in the dressing room. But there is talk that we are able to do so.

And they say that you all play badly. Does that surprise you?
No, it doesn't really surprise me, but the people were used to the 'tiki-taka' style, an attractive way of playing. What has happened is that today it's such a close-run competition and when the teams are so close on points you have to be more direct in your game, go straight for the win.

TALKING ABOUT THE GAMES AND HIS METHODOLOGY

José Mourinho considers that every day he is improving as a manager and that he is fast becoming an expert in all that is necessary to succeed as a football manager since he started his career in Portugal 15 years ago. “I have a problem, which is I’m getting better at everything related to my job since I started. There has been evolution in many different areas – the way I read the game; the way I prepare the game; the way I train; the methodology… I feel better and better."

Speaking openly in this lengthy interview, he explained that he still has a lot of time left in him as a football coach and that up to now, everything is going just fine.
“You know, in football, I’m not so old. At 52 maybe I have 20 years in front of me to coach.

But I feel myself as… you might say an ‘old fox’, Mourinho reflected. "Nothing scares me, nothing worries me too much; it looks like nothing new can happen for me. I am very, very stable in the control of these emotions but I need my time to think. Not wake up in the middle of the night worrying about somebody’s injury, or the tactic for this match. I need to reflect, I need to try to anticipate problems. I need my time”, he said.

The Portuguese manager also assured that has the same attitude as always when talking with the press: "There is one point where I cannot change: when I face the media, I am never a hypocrite.”

THREE OUT FOR ACCUMULATION OF YELLOW CARDS

Carlo Ancelotti will be missing some key players for his team's next league game after three of his players - of the five who were one booking away from a one-match ban - picked up yellow cards. James was booked in the 20th minute when he cut out a midfield pass with his hand. The most controversial yellow card was handed to Ronaldo for allegedly diving in the 50th minute when he fell inside the box after possibly being brought down by Antonio Amaya. This infuriated the Real Madrid players and their vigorous protests led to Kroos also being booked, which means the team will be without three players against Eibar. This will see Ancelotti give some of his squad players a chance to shine.

Ronaldo's anger at being booked was obvious when he was embroiled in further controversy. When he celebrated Real Madrid's opening goal, he gestured to the linesman that he had been robbed of a penalty. He continued protesting his innocence with the referee at the final whistle.
